Another Football season is about to descend upon us. The time of the year that football fans across the nation live for. In millions of homes, fans will grab their NFL teams jersey and cap and favorite brew and plop down on the sofa with friends for another exciting afternoon of Sunday football. Or for those who can actually afford the ticket prices, it’s another season of tailgating parties, hanging out with 60,000 other screaming fans cheering on the hometown team, and Monday morning hangovers. Of course there are some who could care less about all this ‘who struck John’ football stuff and wonder what the big deal is? I’ve known a few women in my time who actually detest football because they know for the next sixteen Sundays they’ll be hard pressed to get the husband to do anything on Sunday afternoons. How is it that football has become such a fixture in American culture?
Growing up in Baltimore in the 60′s, I was an avid fan of the Baltimore Colts. They played football in an old horseshoe shaped place that they called Memorial Stadium. They had great teams during those years and won a couple of championships. A few years earlier they played in what many people call the ‘Greatest Game’ in the 1958 Championship game against the New York Giants. For me, I think it’s rather silly to call any one game the greatest because there’s been so many great games through the years. What that game did accomplish was capture the attention of thousands of people across the nation, and pushed the NFL to the next level.
The football ritual itself reminds me of a gladiator spectacle. People dress up in crazy costumes, sit out in all kinds of weather, act like raving lunatics to watch a bunch of 300 pound beefy boys bang each other around for the next three hours. No one gets killed at the end, but I notice that near the end of the game when the outcome has usually been decided, the camera’s will oftentimes pan to the owner’s booth, where you’ll get a shot of the victorious owner. With a little imagination, it’s not difficult picturing the owner giving a thumbs up or down to determine the losers fate.
The game itself reminds one of a movie from the Lifetime Channel. You have the good guys and the bad guys. You have the drama of the ups and downs through the course of the game. You also have the umpteen commercial breaks along the way.(By the way, if you really want to see the game from a different perspective, go to one. The constant stoppage of the game for commercial breaks will seem so out of place at the game. You’re sitting there wondering why are they stopping the game now? At home, you’re so accustomed to this, and you use this time for running to the bathroom, refrigerator, etc., but at the game you’re just sitting there thinking enough already, get on with the game). Anyway, the game winds to it’s conclusion, and if it’s really a good production, it will come down to the ‘two minute drill’, where the home team pulls the game out at the very ending. Just like our protagonists in the movie. Usually the good guys win, but not always.
After the game, the people wander home to their homes or neighborhood bars to discuss the day’s events. Usually there’s a game on Sunday Night Football where they can continue to get their fix of football right on to the early morning hours. The next morning is rough for the die hards, and leads one to recall the statement about hoping that you don’t buy a car that was made on Monday, and why. In any event, this goes on for the next sixteen weeks, and if your team is lucky enough to make it to the playoffs, all bets are off.
Yes, the National Football League, or as some would say, the National Felony League has made itself a part of American life and culture. It’s a huge business that millions of fans live for, and spend dearly to be a part of. As for me, I can no longer bring myself to sit in front of the boob tube for hours on end on a Sunday. I’d much rather get out and take a walk in the woods instead. Besides, I can no longer endure the Monday Morning payback as opposed to being a Monday Morning quarterback.
Did you see the Rams flop at home Sunday in a 38-28 loss to the Cardinals? The game sailed over the total, which is not a surprise as the Rams have the fourth-worst defense in the NFL. The Rams have a high octane offense with loads of weapons in the running and passing game, but the defense has been poor the last two years under coordinator Larry Marmie, who replaced the popular Lovie Smith. It’s obvious Marmie does not possess Smith’s talent for defense. 70% of the Rams games have gone over the total this season (7-3). It’s those type of team strengths and weaknesses (bad defense, good offense) that handicappers look for when examining totals. The Rams are 4-1 over the total at home, too, on their slick artificial carpet.
Speaking of Lovie Smith, he’s since gone on to be head coach of the Chicago Bears. He has an abundance of defensive talent, and limited offensive options along with a rookie quarterback. It’s no surprise that Smith prefers to win games with his defense and play conservative offensively with a rookie QB. The Bears are 8-2 under the total this season. Think that’s just a trend? Smith ran the same formula a year ago as Chicago went 10-6 under the total, meaning they are 18-8 under since he’s become Bears coach!
Handicapping totals is about line value, but it’s also about the styles a football team plays. Another factor to keep in mind as we come down the stretch of the NFL season is weather. Northern cities like Chicago, New York, Boston, Philly and Pittsburgh are getting cold this time of year. It’s essential to check weather conditions on game day. Cold weather is tougher on offenses, as is chilling winds and snow which is also something that will become more common.
The Colts improved defense was one of the big surprises of the NFL season. But notice they haven’t been as strong of late, giving up over 20 points in 4 of the last 5 games. The Bengals got them for close to 500 yards Sunday. After starting the season 5-0 under the total, the Colts offense has begun to click, while the defense has begun to bend more and Indy is 5-0 over the total the last five contests. The Bengals/Colts shootout Sunday went over the total in the first half!
You might classify the Cleveland Browns in the Chicago Bears category, too: Plodding offense, tough defense. Head coach Romeo Crennel has a great defensive mind, winning three of the last four Super Bowls as coordinator of the Patriots defense. The Browns are improved defensively under his guidance, going 8-2 under the total. And the Patriots miss Crennel. Along with his absence and numerous injuries to the secondary, the Patriots are 6-3 over the total, with a fine passing attack but a suddenly poor secondary.
Injuries, too, can change a team significantly. The NY Jets have an incredibly anemic offense rotating four QBs this season. The Jets are 4-2 under the total on the road where the offense is averaging just 7 points per game! The Steelers can’t wait for Ben Roethlisberger to get healthy, and notice Pittsburgh is 5-0 under the total on the road with a tough defense and a conservative offense without Big Ben. Stats, styles, coaching and weather all contribute to overs and unders.

College football recruiting has been an ever changing landscape since the internet became widely used and information has become so easily accessible. There are many college football and college basketball recruiting sites like ESPN, Rivals, and Scout, but there are bound to be new upcoming recruiting sites that can hopefully do things just a little bit better. ESPN, Yahoo owned Rivals, and Fox owned Scout have not been able to improve upon their age old design. College recruiting is starting to expand more and more and with that expansion a new face is needed. Old college sports websites just won’t just it anymore. A new network that has up-to-date information 24/7 would be ideal. Too often is information outdated, or just plan wrong.
The whole 24 hours a day 7 days a week thing is not about how often a website would be up, (obviously a website is up all the time) it is more about how much content would always be available. A site that included all the best local content and even brought in current content providers, like college sports forums, up to date videos, and even social networking sites, would utterly dominate the college football and college basketball recruiting market.
A lot could be said about the current coverage available right now as well. The entire nation deserves to be covered, not just the conferences that your network has contracts with (ESPN). The north and the west seemed to be ignored, while the south and east are covered constantly. The bigger market is in the east, but this leads to skewed rankings as well as poor coverage in some areas of the country. There should not be 3 different sites each saying a potential recruit has totally different heights, weights, speeds, or college offers.
It should also not take hours or even days to update when a recruit has given a verbal commitment or signed a Letter of Intent. A new recruiting website needs to be built from the ground up and implement the top technological advancements available. A lot of the pitfalls the current websites have like poor quality comment, poor quality message boards, terrible user interfaces, or even poor quality communities is something that could easily be fixed if the time was put into doing so. It is finally time to replaces these old sub standard college recruiting sites trying to be a jack of all trades with ONE site who has one focus; college recruiting.

Football is a great All American Pastime football and is the sport where we get together with our fellow fans and give our full-scale support to our team by buying Raven Tickets. Whether holding a tailgating party at the game or hosting a game party with some friends while watching the game on television and rooting for our teams, has become a pleasant routine in the lives of football followers. Whatever your purpose like a victory celebration for your team or just plainly a celebration of a great game or why not a big birthday celebration, throwing an All-Pro football theme party is always being look forward just like being excited to get early Raven Tickets for the game.
There are a lot of crafts that you can do if you determine to have a football party. Football parties aren’t restricted to just the Super Bowl after party celebration. If you are a big enthusiast of the sport and have a lot of friends who share this love, then you could basically hold a football party at your handy time. Here are some football decorations suggestions that is a big assist to set the style for your party:
For starter why not welcome your guests with a huge individualized football banner, that can also serve as a great way for them to locate your house. We tend to toss the football around to get in the spirit of the day and if you want a raucous crowd just like being in the game after getting Ravens Tickets, set the tone early with pennants and banners in the yard or in your window.
Don’t forget to offer guests with face paint as they enter the party and have them style their hair like spikes. Encourage each guest to display their loyalty before the game begins by painting their face with their favored team. You can give gifts like a Ravens Tickets for the most crazy look.
Decorate your tablecloth that would signify a football item. In attaining this purpose, purchase a green tablecloth or use green bulletin board paper, and then paint it with white lines so it looks like a football field. You can add a sponge or potato into the shape of a football, just cut them in a potato shape and use brown paint and paint it that it would look like a football. It’s a great add-on to your football tablecloth or paper.
Tie balloons using the colors of your favorite team to a football and place in the center of the table and place Pompom around the football, matching your team’s colors. You can also place it around the TV area, so your guests can cheer during the game. Consider a simple place setting such as a bottle of Gatorade and a referee whistle hanging.
Freddie Brister asked:
Alabama Football has a rich history that dates back almost 70 years. They have been dominant program in college football during that time frame. They have won the most championships of any NCAA football team in the history of the game with twelve. Football is a religion in Alabama and the “Roll Tide” is at the center of attention on any given Saturday.
Alabama came into national prominence when the program was taken over by head coach Wallace Wade. Wade was a Brown alum who took over a program that had struggled in recent years. However, with Wade’s coaching prowess and the help of his athletic director, the school was bringing in athletes from all over the country and not just Alabama. This is a trend that became very popular with schools across the country and a trend that continues today. Wade led the school to two national championships during his eight years as head coach at Alabama, however it was the first championship in 1926 that put the team on the map and they have remained ever since. After Wade left, it was almost a revolving door of coaches; however, they managed to win four more national championships with Athletic Director George Denny, for whom the Alabama stadium is named after, at the helm over the football program.
Alabama struggled in the early fifties and were starting to lose credibility as a college football powerhouse, however that all changed in 1958. In 1958, Paul “Bear” Bryant took over this struggling program and turned them into arguably the most successful football program in the history of NCAA football. Bryant would coach the team for 24 years before retiring in January 1983. During his time as head coach the Alabama football team seemed almost unbeatable. They won 6 national championship and 13 conference championships during his time as head coach. His Alabama teams won 232 games during his 24 years as head coach. Bryant retired following the 1982 Liberty Bowl as arguably the greatest college football coach of all-time. Ironically enough when asked what he would do now that he was retired; he said that he would probably croak in a week. Four weeks later Bryant died of a heart attack. However, the legacy of Bryant still lives today and all Alabama coaches have been compared to him.
Since Bryant left the Crimson Tide there have been many coaches that have tried to create the greatness that he brought to the Alabama program, however in the 27 years since his departure they have only won one national championship and two conference championship, with no national titles since 1992. However, with the hiring of Nick Saban in 2007, the school has a newfound confidence not seen since the days of Bryant. The Crimson Tide still remains one of the most respected teams in all of college football and probably will because of the impact Bryant had on the program.
Dave J. Burns asked:
There are many different football defence and offence formations and plays that are available today for a coach to choose. With a click of the mouse one can find an endless amount of information and ideas on team systems and philosophies on the internet.
But what is the best one suited for you or better yet, suited for your football team? We all have our favourite defence or offence that we would love to play and implement. However, the point we would like to make is that it’s quite probable that your favourite defence you like and want to play is outside the reach of your player’s abilities. It’s important as a coach that you evaluate your teams abilities and static factors. Static factors would be the unchangeable such as size, strength, athletic ability, speed, desire, and determination. Basically, things that are presented to you that you have no control over. Once you determine these factors its up to you as the coach to select the right systems that your players will thrive in based on their abilities. The worst thing you can do is select a system that will be too much for your team to handle. In the end, it will come back to haunt you!
In most programs testing these factors is done in the early days of your training camp. The coaches will chart, record, and monitor the different strengths and weakness of each player. From that point, they will discuss the type of offence and defence that they will implement in order to get the very best from their players abilities. Perhaps you have a large group of solid offensive linemen and a few good athletes. Probably your evaluation based on these factors is that you will build your offence around your O-line and be a running football team. Or defensively you might evaluate that you don’t have a lot of D-lineman or good size so you compensate by playing a scheme like a 3-4 in order to take advantage of your speed at the linebacker and safety positions. Either or, you’ve selected a scheme that is within your player’s abilities.
By doing this you will get the best possible system that your players will thrive in as it will be designed around their strengths. they will gain confidence in it, and no doubt, be tough to play against.
A lot of coaches make the mistake of implementing systems just because they like them and ignore the static factors. For the most part, we are coaching programs when we are dealt our players. There’s no recruiting process to get players in that will thrive under the system we like. Therefore we can only play the hand we are dealt and that means it’s important to get a handle on the static factors so that we can implement the best possible defence, offence, or special teams.

Sports are different recreational activities created to test an individual’s skills and talents. It is created not only for the mere purpose of fun but they are also created to bring out the best of an individual. When you talk about benefits, there are lists of health benefits one can get out of playing a certain type of sport. Remember that the body and the mind are working altogether as you play a sport and that alone makes an individual physically and mentally fit.
You can choose from the categories of sports depending upon your choice and your skills as well. There are water sports, indoor and outdoor and even extreme sports. The most important thing of all is that you have full time dedication to your chosen sport. If you want to become successful and be famous, you have to at least exert effort in practicing and in learning routines, the rules and new techniques. It may be very difficult at first but once you get a hang of it, you will already find it easy and worth it. This can also be applied when you are still learning how to use the tazer gun and as soon as you have mastered how to use it well, you will then learn to value it and see its worth.
Football is one famous sport played by the toughest men in the world. Why tough? Because they have to be strong in order for them not to easily fall down and be defeated. It is a tough team sport that rivals baseball as the most popular athletic event for spectators in any country. Millions of people are watching football games due to the fact that they are often accompanied by halftime shows with marching bands and alumni and fun club gatherings.
This type of sport is basically an autumn sport with teams playing from 8 to 16 games usually occurring on successive weekends. Each team must have 11 players on the field at a time. Teams are allowed to substitute their players between play without restrictions. This is a time sport. The team who gets to have most points at the end of the time period wins the game. Just like basketball, it is divided into 4 periods or quarter having a long half time between the second and the third quarter. Just imagine how players are deeply pressured as they play the game.
Like any other game, football has its own set of rules as well. If these rules are not followed, penalties will be served just the same as how an individual will be charged with several penalties if he illegally uses the dog tazer. Players should have knowledge on these so they will know what to prevent as they play the game.
The most common types of penalties are false start which means the player moves prior to the snap. Offside penalty is given to the player either defense or offense when he is on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage of the snap. Holding is given to a player when he tackles another player. Facemask is used to protect the face that is why it is illegal if another player tries to pull it off.
Players are also not allowed to run after kickers and quarterbacks especially when they have already thrown the ball. And intentional grounding is given to the player when he intentionally pass the ball nowhere near the receiver just to avoid being sacked. All of these are important penalties that can be given if you will not follow the right way to play the game.
Dave Cisar asked:
Many times a youth football game won’t go the way you want or expect it to go. Sometimes you can even have the officiating apparently go against you. No one, not you or the officials are ever going to call a perfect game. Then there are other games where the other team just seems to get under your skin a little. Maybe their kids play a bit past the whistle or even jaw with some unkind or even swear word language. As youth football coaches, how should we respond?
Here is what one youth football coach did last week:
ksdk.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=156693&provider=topStories
Watch the video, the coach pushes a kid from the opposing team out of the handshake line by his facemask. This coache’s excuse was that this player had supposedly been using foul language in the game and was saying something negative to his kids as the players went through the handshake line. The player that was pushed played on the winning team, the coach doing the pushing was on the losing team. The coach stated that he wanted the kid to “knock it off” and was just “doing what he would do to his own son”.
Of course the pushed player and his parents claim the lad said nothing and is an angel on earth, a classic, he said, she said situation. They are pressing assault charges.
Does it really matter what the player said? What kind of an example did this coach set for his players? When confronted with a situation you feel you are being disrespected, answer with force. While most of us coaching youth football would like all the kids to behave as well as out own kids, do we have the right to handle all kids we come in contact with the same way we would our own children? The way I discipline my children is what works based on what my wife and I believe is right for our family and fits the personalities of our children, Our kids are well adjusted, fun, outgoing and well behaved. My guess is we are far stricter than 90% of the population and it works for us, but that doesn’t give me permission or the right to use the same methods on your kids, even if your kids are foul mouthed spoiled brats. Especially if your idea of discipline involves any type of physical contact.
What should this coach have done if this child had been acting in the way that he described?
He could have made note of the players number, the exact language the player was using and talked to the players coach well after the coaches and players had finished their post game meeting. The coach could have then used that supposed incident as a ‘teaching moment”, instructing his players what SHOULD be done in a handshake line and how by NOT responding they were doing the right thing. A better approach may have been to ask your players what they thought this players actions made the player look like to them. Hopefully your players would realize that acting in this fashion (if he did), what a buffoon and low life the jawing player appeared to all. Games should be settled on the football field not by jawing before, during or after games. Hopefully this is what your players learn from you and your actions.
Fortunately I’ve never been subjected to this type of behavior. I can think of just one time it was remotely even close. A player from the opposing team was flagged for a flagrant unsportsmanlike on the next to last play of the game. He had done the same thing on 2 previous occasions but had not been flagged for it. During the handshake line this kid had a smirk on his face a mile wide. I didn’t say anything nor did my players, the game was over and finished. We used it as a teaching moment for our kids. who by the way aren’t angels all the time either. We always hand out pop to the other team in the handshake line, after a loss we saw several of our players shaking up the pop so it would “explode” when opened. We addressed it immediately and aggressively (involved lots of running) and it never happened again. I guess if that’s the worst we have to deal with we are probably doing alright.
While this is a reprehensible act by the coach and he should be removed from coaching immediately and not allowed to coach again, is a lawsuit really necessary? The player had his equipment on and he wasn’t hurt. Wouldn’t a permanent ban on this coach and an apology to the player and both teams suffice?
Dave J. Burns asked:
As a football coach I am consistently evaluating and tinkering with my depth chart. A lot of times I’ll shuffle through it, add names, change names, and drop names. Move names from a defensive position to an offensive one and visa-versa. I find that consistently managing your depth keeps you organized an up to date in your player development.
Like all good football systems that you implement, your depth chart reflects your player’s strengths and where exactly they fit in the scheme of things. A football coach by maintaining this easy system will be on top of his player’s progress and keep the best possible line up on the field. It’s a good way to track player progress over the course of the season and identifies players that have improved or have gotten better than one that’s in a starting position.
So how does it work?
Well, at the start of a season during training camp I’ll set up my first chart. I’ll list on it all football positions that are on the football team including specialty positions and for each position I’ll assign a name or names to that football position of the player who at that time I feel is the best player for that spot. After each practice, I’ll spend 15 minutes evaluating my depth chart, and move the players up and down based on their performance and improvement. I refer to it regularly and have it with me all the time.
I find it is valuable when injuries occur in the game and you need a player substitution right away, pull out the depth chart and scan down and find the player who’s the next to go in at that position. It saves time.
I also enjoy discussing the depth chart with the assistant coaches on a player’s progress and development. A depth chart analysis will reward a player’s hard work and progress while at the same time challenge your players to work hard to keep their positions and not to drop down in the chart rankings.
Cheers!
